SMC pops concert benefits Beckwith Theatre

‘The Secret Garden’ opens March 1
Southwestern Michigan College presents its spring musical, “The Secret Garden,” March 1-4 in the theatre of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac campus. “The Secret Garden,” directed by SMC Manager of Theatre Operations and Applied Performing Arts Marcus Roll, tells the story of Mary Lennox (Morgan Smith), a sickly 10-year-old girl orphaned by cholera in India. She goes to Yorkshire, England, to live with her embittered, reclusive, hunchback Uncle Archibald (Zach Allyn) and his invalid son Colin (Braden Miesse, 11).
SMC's Visual and Performing Arts Department announces spring slate
Southwestern Michigan College's spring semester 2018 schedule for Visual and Performing Arts is highlighted by something old and something new. The old: a musical based upon a 100-year old novel. The Secret Garden, starring Morgan Smith of Kalamazoo as Mary Lennox, Zach Allyn of Hastings as Uncle Archibald and Janis Young of St. Joseph as Aunt Lily, takes place March 1-4.
SMC creative in enlarging art gallery
Southwestern Michigan College debuted its remodeled and enlarged art gallery at a reception on Feb. 14 by showcasing alumna Jessika Clement’s series of eight outsized oil paintings, “The Generous Deceit of Elusive Darkness.” “We just completed a two-stage renovation,” Visual and Performing Arts Chairman Marc Dombrosky said. “It doesn’t just look different, it sounds different” with an interior wall moved to make the rear gallery as big a space as the front gallery in Room 108 of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac campus.
Dogwood salutes SMC arts support
Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, approaching its 25th anniversary in 2016, presented Southwestern Michigan College with a Commitment Award recognizing its support of the arts in Dowagiac.
Lillie endowment benefits SMC bands, choirs
A $27,789 Albert V. and Deana M. Lillie Fine and Performing Arts Endowment has been established at Southwestern Michigan College. Mrs. Lillie stipulated this endowment shall be used jointly by the Director of Choral Activities and the Director of Band Activities at their discretion for needs within the SMC Fine and Performing Arts Department.
