Lillie endowment benefits SMC bands, choirs
A $27,789 Albert V. and Deana M. Lillie Fine and Performing Arts Endowment has been established at Southwestern Michigan College. Mrs. Lillie stipulated this endowment shall be used jointly by the Director of Choral Activities and the Director of Band Activities at their discretion for needs within the SMC Fine and Performing Arts Department.
‘Choralbaret’ a triple threat Nov. 10
If Southwestern Michigan College’s “Choralbaret” was a pizza, it would be a supreme. Yes, it’s the fall choir concert, but loaded with extra “toppings,” including theatre and dance elements. SMC choirs, conducted by Director of Choral Activities David Carew, present “Choralbaret” Friday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the theatre of the Dale A. Lyons Building.
Chorllennium debuts Oct. 14
Oct. 14’s Chorllennium Singtoberfest concert marks the debut performance by an ensemble Southwestern Michigan College Director of Choral Activities David Carew assembled. The evening begins with hors d’oeuvres at 7:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 8 in the Student Activity Center of the Charles O. Zollar Building on SMC’s Dowagiac campus.
Baker reception overflows SMC art gallery

Nov. 3 fall band concert incorporates art
Southwestern Michigan College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents the 2017 fall band concert on Friday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the theatre of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac campus. Featured will be the SMC Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and Brass Band under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Korzun and the SMC Flute Choir under the direction of Christina Gibson.
Michelle Stambaugh revives Mud-Lucious
The second coming of Mud-Lucious delivers downtown Dowagiac more than Southwestern Michigan College alumna Michelle Stambaugh’s pottery studio. Stambaugh, who studied with David Baker and Sherrie Styx while earning her SMC associate degree, in 2013 opened the first Mud-Lucious at the other end of Front Street in Laurie Anne’s resale boutique. Now Laura Kinzler’s vintage clothing line is part of Stambaugh’s storefront at 206 S. Front St. in the former Dowagiac Vacuum Center.
Dogwood salutes SMC arts support
Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, approaching its 25th anniversary in 2016, presented Southwestern Michigan College with a Commitment Award recognizing its support of the arts in Dowagiac.
SMC's Beckwith concert to become annual event
Southwestern Michigan College’s annual Pops Concert hit the road St. Patrick’s Day to Beckwith Theatre in downtown Dowagiac. The SMC Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Jonathan Korzun and the SMC Vocal Jazz Ensemble directed by David Carew performed to a packed house at 7:30 p.m. March 17. All proceeds benefit the Beckwith’s fundraising campaign for a new roof and other building renovations.
