Nursing students present poster projects

Seventeen cultural-sensitivity projects by 39 Southwestern Michigan College nursing students — 36 women and three men — were displayed Oct. 18 in the Dale A. Lyons Building lobby.

“We look at how six phenomena affect health care — communication, time, space, social organization, environmental control and biological variations,” instructor Jeanie Mitchel explained. “It gives a chance to think about how we’re going to treat (patients from diverse backgrounds) if they come into a hospital or we go out and do home care.”

How students respond to the assignment continues to evolve.

This year, for example, some students prepared cuisine examples for their lunchtime audience, such as kimchi, a Korean staple made with spicy pickled cabbage.

“It grows and grows every year and they all do their own thing,” Mitchel said. “They take it and run with it in their own way, which is really cool.

“They get mad at me when I give them the assignment because it’s kind of vague, but that way they have to use their heads to see how they are going to present this so people understand their culture and how it relates to health care.”
