SMC Art Gallery displays Fischer Dance video installation
Southwestern Michigan College recently hosted Hannah Fischer, Artistic Director of Fischer Dance, for a series of related events — an exhibition in the Art Gallery, a workshop with students and lecture to the campus community. HOLDING SPACE For the month of January, our Art Gallery transforms into an immersive video installation screening their nine-part dance film series, HOLDING SPACE. Multiple projections (of all nine films) screen in on-going loops across the galleries, creating the sensation of the dances moving and transforming; inviting viewers to explore the physical space and develop new relationships between the works.
Choirs, bands play Holiday Concert twice
Southwestern Michigan College Department of Visual and Performing Arts’ annual gift to the community, the Holiday Concert, took place Saturday, Dec. 15. Twice.
All Faculty Invited to SMC Gallery
Southwestern Michigan College’s annual faculty exhibit is not just art instructors’ work, but pieces from faculty representing nursing, mathematics, environmental and biological sciences, chemistry, communications, English and welding. “This is the first time we decided to reach out beyond the visual art faculty to show work that expresses the creative campus community we have,” Visual and Performing Arts Department Chairman Marc Dombrosky said.
SMC Fall Band Concert illustrated by students' art
Southwestern Michigan College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents its 2018 Fall Band Concert Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the theatre of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac Campus. Featured will be the SMC Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and Brass Band under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Korzun. Admission is free.
SMC Art Gallery exhibits Berrien artist collective
Fun Squad’s “The Kids’ Table” multi-media art exhibition fills Southwestern Michigan College’s gallery through Nov. 1. The Benton Harbor artist collective builds interactivity into every show, from indoor swings to free haircuts. For The Kids’ Table, visitors are encouraged to “unleash their inner child” by coloring, exploring and creating — or playing ping-pong on — a collaborative table.
Fall Choral Concert features special CMU guest
Central Michigan University’s Dr. Amanda Pabyan will be a special guest at Southwestern Michigan College’s Fall Choral Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9. SMC alumni Anthony Tibbitts from Edwardsburg, now a CMU vocal performance major, will join her from Mount Pleasant to sing at the concert in the theatre of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac campus.
Renowned magician headlines new fall variety show
“Scenes from the Station,” Southwestern Michigan College’s new fall variety show, pairs Stuart MacDonald, an internationally acclaimed magician, with top student talent for a time-traveling train trip. SMC Express passengers will be entertained twice this weekend with singing, dancing, jazz, Victor Borge’s Phonetic Punctuation, the eye-popping comedy of Craig Wells and even stage combat.

SMC creative in enlarging art gallery
Southwestern Michigan College debuted its remodeled and enlarged art gallery at a reception on Feb. 14 by showcasing alumna Jessika Clement’s series of eight outsized oil paintings, “The Generous Deceit of Elusive Darkness.” “We just completed a two-stage renovation,” Visual and Performing Arts Chairman Marc Dombrosky said. “It doesn’t just look different, it sounds different” with an interior wall moved to make the rear gallery as big a space as the front gallery in Room 108 of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac campus.
Dogwood salutes SMC arts support
Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, approaching its 25th anniversary in 2016, presented Southwestern Michigan College with a Commitment Award recognizing its support of the arts in Dowagiac.
