“Visionary,” the new Fritz Olsen sculpture in Southwestern Michigan College’s Fred L. Mathews Library, is a personal gift from the Sawyer artist and his wife, opera singer Martha Cares. Dedicated Oct. 25, the wall plate honors the library’s namesake, who chaired the SMC Board of Trustees for half a century before his March 19, 2017, death at 87. The plaque memorializes “a man with vision and foresight who persevered and prevailed with determination and love for his community.”
Southwestern Michigan College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents its 2018 Fall Band Concert Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the theatre of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac Campus. Featured will be the SMC Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and Brass Band under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Korzun. Admission is free.
“Roadrunner Days” Friday, Nov. 2, and Monday, Nov. 19, offer opportunities for a more personal introduction to Southwestern Michigan College. Each event begins at 10 a.m. from the Student Activity Center off Dailey Road on the Dowagiac campus and includes a housing overview, campus tour, lunch with the Student Life team and an academic information session with deans of the three schools. Nineteen cultural-sensitivity projects by 38 Southwestern Michigan College nursing students were displayed Oct. 24 in the Dale A. Lyons Building.
Not only did Chemical Bank in Niles step up with a $5,000 donation for Southwestern Michigan College’s Roadrunner Kitchen food pantry, but the bank intends to make it an annual contribution, Michiana Community President Todd Obren said. “I felt moved when I presented the freezer recently on behalf of the Board of Trustees,” Obren said. “I saw the need and what a great thing it was for students.”
