SMC pops concert benefits Beckwith Theatre

Southwestern Michigan College’s Select Voices and Jazz Ensemble played their second annual benefit concert for Dowagiac’s Beckwith Theatre March 16.

Select Voices for “Jazz at the Beckwith” featured James Taylor’s “That Lonesome Road,” The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows,” The Beatles’ “I’ll Follow the Sun” in surround-sound and solo selections by Jessica Flagel of Watervliet, Brittany Schesnuk of Stevensville and Zach Allyn of Hastings.

Men’s Ensemble and Director David Carew closed the first half of the pops concert with the doo-wop classic “Duke of Earl.”

After intermission, Dr. Jonathan Korzun’s Jazz Ensemble played “Blue Monk” (solos, Glenn McFarland, tenor saxophone; and Thomas Melcher, trumpet); “Makin’ Whoopee” (Lamour Humphrey, tuba; and Jacob Walker, trumpet); “Samba de Orphee (Jacob Walker, trumpet; Anaya Roschyk, guitar; and Glenn McFarland, alto saxophone); “Mack the Knife,” with vocal soloist Kayla Rose; and Travis Craighead, tenor saxophone; and “What You Dealin’ With” (Monica Harpole, trombone; Samantha Dhoore, flute; Glenn McFarland, alto saxophone; and Thomas Melcher, trumpet).
