Chemical Bank awards PTK's Roadrunner Kitchen $5,000

Not only did Chemical Bank in Niles step up with a $5,000 donation for Southwestern Michigan College’s Roadrunner Kitchen food pantry, but the bank intends to make it an annual contribution, Michiana Community President Todd Obren said. “I felt moved when I presented the freezer recently on behalf of the Board of Trustees,” Obren said. “I saw the need and what a great thing it was for students.”

It costs $2,300 per semester for the Phi Theta Kappa honor society to fund the pantry.

“Donations such as this will help us sustain the Roadrunner Kitchen for many, many students in the future. It makes sense that hungry students do not make good students. Their very success depends on donations such as Chemical Bank’s,” PTK President Kathy Smiley-Strouse told the Board of Trustees Oct. 15.

“If you have students going hungry, how in the world can you expect them to concentrate on class?” Obren said. “Learning is not a priority if you’re hungry. I’m glad we could help out. It’s certainly serving a big need” with an estimated 42 percent of community college students nationally struggling with food insecurity.

“We want them to not have to be in survival mode,” Natalie Anagnos, an SMC instructor and PTK co-advisor, said. “The students are beyond grateful.”
