‘Whale Rider’ featured for Women's History Month discussion

Maria DeRose introduced “Whale Rider” and led a discussion with about 20 students for the Women’s History Month diversity event before spring break.

In the 2002 film, only males are allowed to ascend to chiefdom in a New Zealand Maori tribe.

This ancient custom is upset when the child selected as next chief dies at birth, but his twin sister, Pai (Keisha Castle Hughes) survives.

At 12, she enlists the help of her grandmother and the training of an uncle to claim her birthright, but first she must win over her ultra-traditional grandfather.
