SMC led off Dowagiac's summer concert series June 6

Dowagiac kicked off its summer concert series June 6 with hometown favorite the Southwestern Michigan College Brass Band. The 10-week series, hosted by the Dowagiac Downtown Development Authority, will be staged for the second year on the lawn of the James E. Snow Professional Building at Main and Front streets. Weekly concerts start at 7:30 p.m.

Vickie Phillipson, Chamber of Commerce and DDA program director, who oversees the concert series, said five corporate sponsors joined hands to underwrite the series: Cass County Council on Aging, Four Winds Casino, Honor Credit Union, Lyons Industries and SMC.

The Brass Band presented a variety of music, from marches to movie themes, conducted by Dr. Jon Korzun, including “The European,” “A Nightingale Sang on Berkeley Square,” the 1985 Western “Silverado,” “Misty” featuring Mary Davidson on flugelhorn and John Williams’ theme from “1941,” the 1979 period comedy Steven Spielberg directed that starred John Belushi, John Candy and Dan Ackroyd.

Concerts continue with Allie Garland and Awesome Sauce, June 13; Schlitz Creek, June 20; Chameleon, June 27; Out of Favor Boys, July 11; Shelagh Brown Band, July 18; Rebel Pride, July 25; The Skeletones, Aug. 1; Van Dyke Review, Aug. 8; and A Touch of Country, Aug. 15.  Music ranges from R&B to the blues, classic rock, folk and country.
